In 1907 Edward and Marian Mac Dowell founded The Mac Dowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire where the popular Mt. Monadnock is located.
The Mac Dowell Colony serves as a retreat for artists which includes, artists, composers, playwrights, poets, and writers. For one to be invited you must be approved by a committee.
There are between 20 to 30 artists there at any one time and the longest any artist can stay is two months. Room and board is free and there are 32 studios on the 450 acres in this colony and each studio is a seperate building.
75 winners of The Pulitzers have attended the colony and over 7,500 have studied at the colony, those are impressive numbers and brings great pride to the colony.
Many philanthropists have contributed to the Mac Dowell Colony, to mention a few; Andrew Carnegie,
former President Grover Cleveland and financier J.P. Morgan.
A list of some notable artists;
L.M. Kit Carson who wrote " The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2"
