The State Hermitage Museum located in St. Petersburg, Russia is one of the largest and oldest museums in the world.
The complex of buildings were ordered to be built under Catherine The Great for her private collection and in 1852 the buildings housing her collections were opened to the public which by then composed of six magnificent buildings along the Neva embankment not to far from The Winter Palace.
The best way to see the museum is to take a tour. This is a must see museum even though fro some it involves a great distance. In looking at the buildings on both the exterior and the interior you will come to realize that the buildings themselves are a work of art.
Many of the great masters are represented in the museum such as; Picasso, Rembrandt, Rubens, Degas, Lippi, Van Gogh, Renoir and many other well known artists from around the world.
