Italian painter Gentile Bellini was from Venice's leading family of painters, and was the official portrait artist for the Doges of Venice. He was also often called upon to go to Constantinople, requested specifically by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II himself.
His most famous paintings include: The Blessed Lorenzo Giustinian, The Miracles of the Relic of the Cross, Procession of the True Cross in Piazza San Marco, and Miracle of the True Cross at the S. Lorenzo Bridge.
