The earliest Prehistoric Cave Paintings date back to approximately 40,000 years ago in Europe during the Aurignacian period. Although no one knows why paleolithic cave paintings were created to begin with, the hypothesis that we can all formulate is that is was a mere form of communication and possibly a means to tell stories to future generations to come.
What is even more interesting, is that these cave paintings are often found deep inside caves where it is mostly very well hidden from any visitors. This is something that we also may not understand the meaning of, but it is an interesting tidbit to know.
Cave paintings have been discovered all around the world in various places such as Spain, Romania, Australia, and even France, It may be a mystery as to why the paintings were ever created to begin with, but they are sure interesting to learn about.
